Freshwater Fishes of the Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware by: Fred C. Rohde, Rudolf G. Arndt, David G. Lindquist, James F. Parnell

Keeping native fishes is far underrated. With limited informational resources keeping these amazing fish can be confusing and intimidating. But if we search hard enough we can find those resources to help make the experience much easier and rewarding. Freshwater Fishes of the Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland, & Delaware is one of those resources.

Though to be clear this book is not written with the fish keeping hobbyist in mind, it does however offer more information than the average field guide. The descriptions include feeding and breeding habits as well as more detailed information on the fishes natural habitat. Overall more information on each species listed. Though the draw back is that the book only covers fishes found in the aforementioned states on the east coast.

The book is laid out quite well and the text is easy to follow. The beginning of the book offers information not typically found in books of this type. It begins with an introduction and brief history of the fish of the region. It then goes over the characteristics of the fish as well as the habitats and zoogeography of the fish found in the states covered. Next is a very interesting chapter covering the collection and study of fishes and following that is a chapter about the impact of humans on the fishes of the region. The book then goes on to briefly talk about common and scientific names and ending the book with the extended section of fish accounts from all the different families of fish found in the areas. Included for each species is the description, distribution, habitat, and natural history.

Overall this book is a great addition to anyone’s library that is a native fish enthusiast. It is a great companion to the typical field guide offering that extra bit of information on the different fish species. As mentioned it is very well laid out making it an easy read and great for future reference. I especially enjoyed the almost 200 quality color photos included of the different fish. I hope books like this one will introduce more people in the hobby to North American native fish keeping. They are an extremely diverse and exciting fish to keep.
